Liv K. at The National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships

At the National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships this weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana, Liv Killam capped an extraordinary season by finishing second in Connecticut and fourth in New England in her 3K race, in 12:11.

Liv’s achievement crowns a stellar cross-country season in which her Country School team won the State Championship for the third consecutive year and extended their undefeated streak to four years.

Luke Schupp, a captain of The Country School cross-country team last year and now a student and runner at Avon Old Farms School, also shone on the national stage by finishing first in Connecticut and seventh in New England.

Despite battling through two injuries earlier this fall, Luke trained with determination to qualify initially for the Connecticut Championships, then for the New England Championships, and ultimately for Nationals.

In Indianapolis, Luke powered through the challenging 5-kilometer grass course, finishing with a personal record of 18 minutes and 4 seconds. His performance bodes well for his upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Racing conditions were one of the opponents, with temperatures at 28°F, a biting 15-mph wind, and a muddy course. The competition was fierce, with runners hailing from 46 states and over 3,000 participants overall. Amid the loud clang of cowbells and the intensity of the moment, both Liv and Luke demonstrated remarkable grit and resilience, representing their schools and New England with pride on this national stage.
