Country School Cross Country McGee Invitational Results

On a crisp, clear fall Saturday, The Country School cross-country team showed up in force at the McGee Invitational, held at Sage Park, in Berlin, CT, where 20 schools vied for glory.

The course's infamous "Happy Mountain" – a name as misleading as they come, thanks to its brutal incline halfway through the race – tested every runner’s grit, but The Country School ran away with three trophies, multiple medals, and a lot to be proud of.

The day kicked off with sixth-grader Liv K's dominant performance in the 1.7-mile course, crossing the line in a blistering 10:47. Her reward? A trophy nearly half her height. Teammate Lucy C. was close behind with an outstanding seventh-place finish at 11:55, followed by fellow sixth-grader Emily A. sprinting across the finish line at 12:30, securing her spot in the top 20.

While Liv, Lucy, and Emily relaxed with snacks, newcomer Micah B. took on the sixth-grade boys race, finishing with a gritty time of 14:25, showing great promise for future meets.

In the 2.2-mile seventh grade girls’ race, first-year runner Veronica S. turned heads with her 16th-place finish, earning a medal in 17:15. Seventh-grader Jonah B. also fought hard, crossing the line in 45th out of nearly 100 runners.

Then came a barn-burner in the boys' seventh-grade race. Henry L went back and forth with another lead runner, ultimately claiming second place in a lightning-fast 14:22 – the quickest time of the day for The Country School and earning himself a trophy that will sit proudly on his shelf.

Captain Tillie K followed with a determined second-place finish in the eighth-grade girls' race, clocking 14:59 and securing her own trophy to strap into the car for the ride home alongside Liv’s trophy.

Battling back from illness, eighth-grade captain Maribel Smith put in a solid effort, finishing 25th and leaving 90 runners behind her in a tough field.

In the final race of the day, eighth-grade Captain Zach B. showed his grit, storming to a ninth-place finish with a time of 14:44 – the second-fastest of the day for the team, proudly earning a medal for his efforts. Not far behind was Kieran F., who continues to improve every race, finishing 17th in 15:22 and adding another medal to The Country School's haul.

Next up for this talented crew: the Hamden Hall Invitational on Wednesday, where they’ll look to build on their momentum.
